What is a cyberattack?
Cyberattacks mean damaging or gaining control of a person’s or company's important documents, data, etc. Some examples of cyberattacks are malicious software (malware), ransomware, etc. Cybercriminals or hackers perform cyberattacks in order to destroy or get access to secret information.
Recently, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a medical research university and hospital in Delhi faced a cyberattack. :(
Okay, what exactly happened?

On 23rd November 2022, a data breach in AIIMS's internal systems was found. So, the online services of the AIIMS outpatient department (OPD), emergency, and other patient care services were shut down.
AIIMS confirmed the problem, and data restoration and server cleaning are taking time as the hospital has a lot of servers.
Can the breached data be recovered?
AIIMS has data on millions of patients, including former prime ministers, that must be kept safely. It is now working with multiple organisations including the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) to implement cyber security measures.
All systems on AIIMS’s network are being checked to ensure they are malware-free. Large hospitals usually have numerous backups of their data. But, before these backups can be restored, the faults which allowed hackers access into the system must be fixed. Otherwise, hackers can access the data restored from the backups as well. After checking all AIIMS systems, CERT-In discovered that no network security measures had been used by the hospital’s computer team (isn’t that crazy!?). So, this made it easy for hackers to access AIIMS’s data.
What did we learn from this article?
We learned that there are evil persons in the world who will do harm to others in order to make money. If you are careless about your own safety, such people may harm you even more.
Let’s hope the data breach situation at AIIMS is resolved soon and such a situation does not happen again.
