What’s going on in Antarctica?
USA’s National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) data shows that the sea ice around Antarctica is at its lowest level as winter ends in the region. This data raises concerns that climate change is causing a decline in Antarctic sea ice.
In the polar regions, ice melts and grows with the seasons. In Antarctica, the ice is usually smallest in February, at the end of summer, and biggest in late September, near the end of winter.
In February, scientists said that the ice around Antarctica was at its smallest at the end of the summer season. And the ice didn't grow much during the winter.
This year's maximum sea ice extent is much lower than the previous record low set in 1986 and below the average from 1981 to 2010.

Has Antarctica’s sea ice been declining every year?

Since 1979, scientists have been regularly measuring the area of Antarctic sea ice. For a long time, the ice there didn't really change, even when other places had unusual weather. In fact, the ice in Antarctica used to grow a lot. But around 2016, things started to change. The ice in the ocean around Antarctica has been decreasing.

How important is sea ice?

It also protects land ice from ocean waves. Without sea ice, the land ice would melt really fast.
