<h5>Who has come up with this suggestion?</h5><p>Pollution levels in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/delhi-s-air-quality-worsens">Delhi-National Capital Region</a> (NCR) have worsened. The city is covered in a toxic cloud. The government is trying its best to control the pollution levels and help the city's residents. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has devised a solution to tackle Delhi’s pollution problem.</p><p>They have suggested using cloud seeding to create artificial rains to help clean the air pollution. This method was invented in 1946. It involves introducing certain substances into supercooled clouds.</p><p>Supercooled clouds are those clouds that are made up of water droplets at below-freezing temperatures but not yet frozen. The substances introduced into the clouds act as nuclei around which raindrops form. Cloud seeding is done by using an aeroplane to release the substances into the clouds.</p><p>It takes some time for rain to form after the substances are introduced. After the raindrops are formed, they fall on the land. This technique can be used on convective clouds as well to produce more rain. Cloud seeding has helped create artificial rainfall in various places, like China, the United Arab Emirates, etc.</p><p>IIT Kanpur has been working to create artificial rain for around five years and also conducted tests in July. A study on cloud seeding experiments conducted successfully in Solapur, Maharashtra, was also published.</p><h5>Who conducted the study in Solapur?</h5><p>A cloud seeding experiment was conducted successfully in Solapur, resulting in 18% higher rainfall than natural conditions. Scientists from the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and other institutes conducted the study. The study findings were published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) journal.</p><p>This experiment was conducted between 2017 and 2019. Lots of clouds were examined during the study using various equipment and aircraft. This study was conducted as part of a project started by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It looks into the potential of using cloud seeding to provide rainwater in areas facing water problems.</p><h5>What are some advantages of cloud seeding?</h5><p>Cloud seeding can help produce rain in drought-affected areas, replenishing water resources and improving agricultural production. It can also be used to minimise the size of hailstones that occur during thunderstorms. This can help reduce property and crop damage. Cloud seeding can also make dry places livable by bringing rain to those regions.</p><p>However, some experts feel that excessive cloud seeding can raise environmental concerns. Similarly, others are concerned that cloud seeding will disrupt the earth's natural moisture balance and affect the environment.</p>
