How do petrol vehicles affect the environment?
Most vehicles run on petrol or diesel. These two liquids are highly flammable and poisonous. While burning, they release air pollution causing gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, etc, and carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas.
Every year, cars on the road are increasing. This is causing an increase in the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere, harming the environment as well as humans.
The state of California in the United States (US) has decided to put a stop to pollution caused by vehicles.
How is California planning to do that?
California has banned the sale of all vehicles that run on petrol from 2035 to fight climate change. This new rule has been put in place so that car companies make cars that do not harm the environment.
The new rule says that by 2026, 35% of new cars sold in California must be electric, hybrid, or hydrogen-powered. This number must rise to 68% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.
This rule is not yet final and will be implemented only after getting approval from the US government.
What are the benefits of electric vehicles?
The biggest advantage of a petrol-free vehicle is that it doesn’t release any carbon dioxide. This will reduce greenhouse gases in the air. Electric vehicles are also quieter than normal vehicles, which will help reduce noise pollution.
What is the future of electric vehicles in India?
The National Institution for Transforming India says that by 2030, a lot of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and buses will be electric. But, the price of electric vehicles is very high. The government must come up with plans to help reduce the price so that they can be bought by most citizens.
Also, before people buy electric vehicles, charging points will have to be built at close distances just like petrol pumps. This will ensure that cars can be charged from anywhere (can you imagine a car running out of battery in the middle of the road?).
