<h5>How do petrol vehicles affect the environment?</h5>  <p>Most of the vehicles that we see on the road run on petrol or diesel. Both these liquids are highly flammable and toxic. When they burn, they emit certain gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, etc. which cause air pollution. They also emit carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas.</p>
<p>Every year, we see more and more cars on the road. More cars automatically mean that more harmful gases are being released into the atmosphere (remember how clean the air got during the COVID-19 lockdown?). In the United States, transportation alone accounts for 27% of the total greenhouse gas emissions.
The adverse effects of petrol and diesel don't end there. Apart from slowly turning our planet into an oven, they also cause many other problems. These include harming the health of humans by inducing breathing problems, body aches, etc. The state of California in the United States (US) has decided to put its foot down to end the root cause of vehicular pollution. </p> <h5>What new rule has been implemented in California?</h5>  <p>California has banned the sale of all vehicles that run on petrol from 2035. They aim to combat climate change with this rule. This rule has been passed so that car companies focus on making vehicles that don't harm the environment.</p>
<p>The rule states that by 2026, 35% of new cars that will be sold in California have to be electric, hybrid, or hydrogen-powered. By 2030, this number must increase to 68% and 100% by 2035. This new rule has been ordered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). </p>
<p>This rule is not final yet and has to be approved by the US government before it can be enforced.

This automatically cuts down the amount of greenhouse gases in the air significantly. Electric vehicles are also quieter than traditional vehicles and will also help in reducing noise pollution.</p>

Several countries are planning to promote electric vehicles since they cause lesser air pollution.
</p> <h5>What is the future of electric vehicles in India?</h5>  <p>According to the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, 80% of two and three-wheelers, 40% of buses, and 30 to 70% of cars in the country would be electric vehicles by 2030. But, electric vehicles are costly and the government will have to come up with plans to make them more affordable. </p>

<p>Another challenge is charging infrastructure. If an electric vehicle runs out of battery, it'll stop working and may cause a massive inconvenience to the public (imagine a car running out of battery in the middle of the road). To solve such issues, the government will have to create car charging points, just like petrol pumps. </p>
