Any Canadian citizen or permanent resident can join a party and vote.</p><p>The election happens in 343 areas (ridings) in Canada to make sure the leader has support from all parts of the country. People vote using a ranked system. They list the candidates in order from first choice to last choice.</p><p>If no one gets 50% of the votes in the first round, the candidate with the fewest votes is removed. Their votes go to the other candidates. This happens again and again until one candidate gets a majority.</p><h5>What’s next for Mr. Carney?</h5><p>Mr. Carney will be the new PM, but he is not a Member of Parliament (MP) yet.
