<h5>What are same-sex parents?</h5>  <p>Chances are, you have grown up seeing a particular kind of family everywhere - mother, father and their children. Even movies and TV shows often show these kinds of families. From the media and the world around us, it may seem like only one kind of family exists, but that’s not true at all.</p>

<p>Families come in all shapes and sizes. Your parents married each other because they love each other. Sometimes a man and a woman fall in love with each other and get married. Other times, a man falls in love with a man or a woman falls in love with a woman.</p>
<p>Families, where both parents are men or both are women, also exist. There are plenty of them in India and other parts of the world. They love their children as much as your parents love you. Their children enjoy doing pretty much the same kind of things you do - eating ice cream, watching movies, hanging out with friends, etc.
</p> <h5>How different are same-sex parents from my parents?</h5>  <p>Many people tend to judge someone based on who they love. They find it easy to accept those who fall in love with a person from the “right” sex. They discriminate against those who fall in love with a person who belongs to the same sex as they do (for example, when a man falls in love with a man and a woman falls in love with a woman).</p>

<p>People who discriminate against same-sex parents do so thinking that children brought up in same-sex households will grow up with a distorted view of the world. They think that same-sex parents are somehow worse than different-sex parents and that same-sex parenting affects a child negatively.</p>
<p>Many studies show that such opinions are inaccurate and prejudiced. The latest study proves that children belonging to same-sex parents are just as well-adjusted as those belonging to different-sex parents.
</p> <h5>Tell me about the study.</h5>  <p>Researchers at the University of Cologne, in Germany, compared the lives of sixty-two children with same-sex parents to the lives of seventy-two children with different-sex parents. The children in both groups were aged between six and sixteen years.
</p> <h5>What was the finding of the study?</h5>  <p>The study’s findings were not surprising at all. It was found that the children of same-sex parents are just as well-adjusted as children of different-sex parents. </p>

Despite the amount of shame, judgement and criticism society heaps on same-sex couples, the same-sex parents did not let it interfere with their family life or trouble their children.
Due to how same-sex parents are treated, they focus on making their children resilient. They also help their children cope with the social rejection targeted their way for having same-sex parents. </p>
<p>The lead researcher on the study, Dr Mirjam Fischer, said that it’s sad that same-sex parents have to prepare to this extent beforehand to protect their children from society’s judgement in the first place.
</p> <h5>That’s sad. Can I do anything to make things better?</h5>  <p>Much like all parents, same-sex parents also want to create a loving home environment to make the children feel cherished and supported. This helps children feel safe, happy and secure in their family life.</p>
