Every year, the world makes more than 460 million tons of plastic. Only about 10% of this plastic is recycled. Recycled means old waste is turned into something new. Most plastic goes into landfills, rivers, or oceans. Scientists warn that if nothing changes, plastic waste could reach 1.7 billion tons by 2060.</p><p>Plastic never really disappears; instead, it breaks into very tiny pieces called microplastics. Microplastics are small bits of plastic that animals and people can swallow by mistake. This harms both humans and the environment.</p><h5>Why Did the Talks Fail?</h5><p>The main conflict was about whether to make less new plastic or just recycle more. Over 100 countries, called the “High Ambition Coalition,” want strict rules to cut plastic and ban dangerous chemicals. But countries like the U.S.A., Saudi Arabia, and Russia disagreed. They wanted to focus only on recycling.</p><p>Another issue was the consensus rule. Consensus means everyone must agree, so even a few countries could stop the plan. Big industries, like oil and chemical companies, also sent many lobbyists. Lobbyists are people who try to change government decisions. They made the treaty weaker by removing strong goals.</p><h5>What Could Be Done Instead?</h5><p>Experts say the best solution is to make less plastic from the start. They also suggest using voting to make decisions, instead of waiting for every single country to agree. Richer countries can give money and machines to poorer ones to help manage plastic waste. Ordinary people should also get a louder voice in these talks, because they are the ones most affected by pollution.</p><h5>Looking Ahead</h5><p>The Geneva meeting failed, but this does not mean hope is gone. Countries may try again, this time with stronger rules and more courage.</p><p>The plastic problem shows that saving Earth needs teamwork and fairness. If we act soon, we can still build a cleaner and safer future for everyone.</p>
