Wearing face masks lowers the risk of spreading COVID-19.

What is the current status of COVID-19 cases in India?

COVID-19 cases have recently increased in India, with more than 11,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Experts believe that this is more likely part of an endemic cycle than a new wave. They are saying that there is no need to worry.

Experts say that cases of COVID-19 will continue to rise for 10-12 more days before decreasing. Very few people are being hospitalised and most are able to recover at home. The latest increase is due to an Omicron subvariant known as XBB.1.16.

The government has advised people to take care to avoid getting the disease.

What is the government doing about the rising COVID-19 cases?

Due to a rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, India has improved its subvariant surveillance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advised people to follow proper COVID-19 behaviour (maintaining distance, washing hands, wearing masks, etc.).

India's Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, recently met with state and union territory health ministers to discuss COVID-19 preparations. Many states have asked people to wear masks while going out in public places. People showing flu-like symptoms have been asked to stay at home.

Serum Institute of India has also resumed COVID-19 vaccine production due to the rise of cases in the nation.

Why are COVID-19 cases rising in India?

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) says the recent COVID rise could be due to a relaxation of COVID-19 rules. It has also risen due to the low testing rate and the appearance of a new COVID type. Many people showing symptoms also refused to be tested.

All these have resulted in the virus spreading unnoticed and infecting more people.

How can one protect themselves from the latest rise in COVID-19?

The IMA has asked people to regularly wash their hands and use sanitisers outdoors. People have also been asked to wear masks in crowded places. One should also maintain a 1-metre distance from other people while in public.

The IMA has also advised people to get vaccinated or get the booster dose. By following these steps seriously, we can help protect ourselves and our families from this disease.
