<h5>What’s so secretive about North Korea?</h5>  <p>North Korea is the most secretive country in the world. It’s a dictatorship where the government controls every aspect of its citizens' lives. Books, TV channels, radio stations and the internet in North Korea only spread government propaganda. North Koreans are not allowed to watch or do anything that the government doesn’t approve of. </p>

<p>North Koreans have been living in this horrible dictatorship since 1948. That’s when the Kim dynasty took over the country and imposed a cruel version of communism on the people.</p>
<p>Most North Koreans are extremely poor and malnourished. North Korea is the polar opposite of its neighbour South Korea, which is a free, creative, colourful and rich country.
</p> <h5>That’s rough. So…how bad is COVID in North Korea?</h5>  <p>North Korea has been battling an explosive COVID-19 outbreak since late April. About two hundred thousand cases are being reported daily in the last few days. The total number of people infected in North Korea is around two and a half million.</p>

<p>Some time back, the North Korean government even rejected free vaccines and medical supplies from China, South Korea, and other countries. In fact, the country’s leaders confidently said that they could overcome the crisis by themselves. </p>
<p>There is, however, a change in the tone of North Korea now. Their leader, Kim Jong Un, has called the outbreak a ‘great upheaval.’ He has blamed government officials for letting the virus spread in the city.
</p> <h5>Why is COVID-19 in North Korea different from the rest of the world?</h5>  <p>In North Korea, the fate of its 25 million people rests entirely on one man - Kim Jong Un. Due to the way that Kim and his government run the country, North Korea’s economy and healthcare system are extremely weak. North Korea also happens to be one of only two countries in the world with an entirely unvaccinated population (the other country is Eritrea).</p>

To make matters worse, a drought hit the country during its crucial rice-planting season. This is expected to increase the already bad food shortage in the country.
</p> <h5>How is North Korea dealing with this outbreak?</h5>  <p>The government of North Korea is dealing with the outbreak in puzzling ways. North Korea recently sent three planes to China to collect medical supplies. China revealed that these had not included anti-pandemic supplies, just regular medical supplies.</p>

North Korea has asked people suffering from symptoms of fever (which is how they’re commonly referring to COVID) to drink lots of herbal tea and take antibiotic tablets. Antibiotics treat diseases caused by bacteria, whereas coronavirus is a disease caused by a virus. Scientists think that the death toll of this outbreak in North Korea alone could be tens of thousands.</p>
<p>In the 1990s, a typhoid outbreak in North Korea led to a huge number of people dying due to similar behaviour of its government. This incident doesn’t look like it’s going to turn out differently.</p>
<p>Let’s hope and pray that the North Korean people can survive the pandemic and that someday they will defeat the Kim dynasty that’s been controlling them for the past 74 years.
