<h5>What is the Metaverse?</h5>  <p>Consider a virtual world where people work, live, shop, and interact with each other from their homes. This is referred to as the metaverse. The word "metaverse" became popular after Facebook changed its name to Meta in October 2021.</p>
<p>People in the metaverse create avatars to represent themselves over there to connect with others (how cool is that!). Digital currency is used to purchase clothes, weapons for games, and many other products in the metaverse. A person can use a virtual reality headset and controllers to travel around the metaverse for fun and other activities.
The metaverse is thought to be the next step in the evolution of the internet. It will be used for many things, like online gaming, business meetings, etc. Many companies like Google, Amazon, Infosys, Wipro, etc., are working on developing the metaverse. </p> <h5>What exactly is the difference between the metaverse and the internet?</h5>  <p>The internet is a massive network that has millions of computers, servers, and other electronic devices. Internet users can check out websites, and purchase and sell products, etc. once they are online. The Internet is also used to talk to other people.</p>
<p>The metaverse, on the other hand, is not looking to compete with or replace the internet. Instead, it is looking to expand on it. Users navigate a virtual area that has similar features as the real world using technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), etc.</p>
<p>People go on the internet to browse something. However, a user, to some extent, can live in the metaverse virtually. Governments may also expand their reach into the metaverse. While most governments maintain a stable presence on the internet, Barbados (a country in the Caribbean) has plans to open an office in the metaverse, especially in the most famous virtual world, “Decentraland.”

      </figure> <p>Decentraland, looked after by the Decentraland Foundation, has been one of the most active virtual worlds in the metaverse since it was launched. Decentraland is a significant virtual environment in the metaverse that connects brands (like Coca-Cola, Dolce & Gabbana, etc.), individuals, businesses, and organisations. Decentraland is free to use.</p>
<p>However, not many people are using it. Decentraland is not quite thriving as was expected. Despite billion-dollar valuations, Decentraland has made little progress. According to data aggregator DappRadar, Decentraland had only 38 active users recently (that’s so low!).
Decentraland denied the figures, claiming that they had 8,000 daily active users. Still, even 8,000 users per day (when we have so many people using the internet daily) is a very low number for something that was said to be the future of online communities.</p>
