They are found in cold places and high mountains.</p><p>Glaciers form when snow keeps falling again and again and does not melt completely. Over many years, the heavy snow turns into hard and solid ice.</p><p>Glaciers store a lot of freshwater. As they slowly move, they release this freshwater into rivers. This water helps people, farms, and nature to survive, especially in dry seasons.</p><h5>What Is the Problem?</h5><p>Glaciers are melting because Earth is getting warmer due to climate change. Warm air melts glaciers from the top, while warm water melts them from below.</p><p>Sometimes, big pieces of ice break off and fall into the ocean. This is called calving.</p><p>Melting also becomes faster because of the albedo effect. White snow reflects sunlight and heat. When the snow melts, dark rock or ice is seen. Dark surfaces absorb more heat, which makes glaciers melt faster.</p><p>Scientists studied more than 211,000 glaciers and found that the current loss of 750–1,000 glaciers each year could soon rise to 3,000 glaciers every year.</p><h5>Why Is This a Big Problem?</h5><p>Melting glaciers cause sea levels to rise. This puts coastal cities and island countries in grave danger. Since 2000, glaciers have raised sea levels by 18 millimetres, and this will continue.</p><p>Glaciers are also important sources of freshwater. When they disappear, rivers can dry up in summer. This creates problems for drinking water, farming, and electricity.</p><p>Animals and plants that need cold water also suffer. Fast melting can cause floods and landslides, which can harm many people living in mountain areas.</p><h5>Can We Help?</h5><p>Scientists say there is still hope, and every small step matters.
