Elephant finally freed from chains.
Imagine being stuck in one spot for 20 years! That’s how Shankar, the African elephant, felt at the Delhi Zoo. He had chains binding him every day. But guess what? Everything changed recently.
Shankar had his chains removed and explored his home freely! Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, visited him with environment ministry officials and experts from Vantara. They wanted to make sure Shankar was happy.
Shankar was a gift from Zimbabwe a long time ago, in 1996. He had a buddy named Bambai, but sadly, Bambai passed away in 2005.

What’s next for Shankar?

Shankar the elephant is learning to enjoy his freedom! After being in chains for so long, a team of friendly helpers is there to make him happy. The people at the zoo are also working to give him a bigger home by expanding his area.
Now that Shankar is free, he looks great and feels better! He even has big toys to play with. The helpers are keeping a close eye on how he eats and plays.
They want to build an animal gym for Shankar to exercise in and are thinking about bringing in a lady elephant with whom he can be friends. Let’s cheer for Shankar and hope he stays happy and free forever!
Animals shouldn’t be chained.
Animals need space to run, play, and explore, just like you! If they're stuck in chains, they can feel sad, hurt, and even become sick. Imagine not being able to move about freely - it wouldn't feel good, right?
Every animal deserves kindness, care, and a safe place to live without chains. Let’s always treat animals kindly!
