<h5>What are the recent flood-hit areas?</h5>  <p>Almost every monsoon season, parts of India and Bangladesh witness massive floods. This year was no different. This time, people living in the Indian state of Assam and the Sylhet region of Bangladesh were affected by enormous flooding.</p>
<p>Unusually heavy rainfall generally leads to flooding. It causes a major loss of life and destruction of property. Many people lost their lives, their homes, their shops, etc. They even lost access to hygienic food and drinking water. </p>
<p>The situation has become so bad that most roads are submerged under water. Some people are stuck in their own homes without any way of getting out. 
</p> <h5>Is there something different about the floods this year?</h5>  <p>Yes - this year's floods are significantly worse than in previous years. According to the government officials in Bangladesh, the floods this year are worse than any floods in the last 122 years. 
Things are not good on the Indian side either. The Indian Meteorological Department has said flood-affected areas received 134% more rain than the normal levels.</p>
<p>Due to such extreme weather conditions, the floods this year are so devastating. The damage has also been significant. More than 100 people have lost their lives, and around four million people have been left homeless. </p>
<p>Schools, hospitals, businesses, etc., have all had to shut down due to extreme flooding. The situation is quite awful. However, many government and non-government organisations are helping them.
</p> <h5>Who is helping the victims of the flood?</h5>  <p>The government authorities in both countries are doing everything they can to help the victims. The Indian military and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) are running round-the-clock rescue operations to get people out of danger zones.</p>
<p>Our Bangladeshi counterparts are being helped by their military. Ms. Sheikh Hasina, their Prime Minister, has visited flood-hit areas to understand and formulate where help is needed the most.</p>
<p>In both countries, various organisations like the Humanitarian Aid International and UNICEF, local places of worship, etc. are also working to rescue and help victims. 
</p> <h5>Are any steps being taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again?</h5>  <p>The governments of both countries have taken steps to reduce the damage caused by floods. For example, the Indian government has built a network of flood forecasting stations covering every major flood-prone river in the country. These stations can predict and warn local authorities when water reaches a dangerous level and there is a risk of flooding.
The Bangladeshi government has prepared a National Plan for Disaster Management (2021-2025) to better combat the damages caused by floods. This plan includes preparing for floods using early warning systems, well-planned rescue operations etc.
</p> <h5>Are there ways to reduce the damage from floods in future?</h5>  <p>Yes, there are ways to mitigate floods. One of the most common ways to do it is by constructing dams to better contain and regulate the excess water flow. Other measures include planting trees or building canals to manage the flow of flood waters.
