<h5>What is a Rajya Sabha?</h5>  <p>Every five years, we elect our leaders to represent us in our country's parliament through elections. These elected leaders then become members of the Lok Sabha (LS), also known as the House of the People. </p>
<p>The LS, however, is only one of the two houses of the parliament. The other house is the Rajya Sabha (RS), also known as the Council of States. </p>
<p>The Rajya Sabha’s main function is to represent every Indian state and union territory in the Indian parliament. Unlike the Lok Sabha, people do not directly elect members of the Rajya Sabha. Out of 245 members of the RS, 233 are elected by the governments of every state and union territory. The remaining twelve members are nominated by the President of India directly.
</p> <h5>What is the role of the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha?</h5>  <p>The role of nominated members is the same as the elected members of the RS. They can participate in the RS's working and law-making process. Nominated members can also advise the RS on any law related to their field of work.
However, nominated members cannot vote in the election of the president of India. Only the elected members have the right to vote in presidential elections. 
</p> <h5>Who can be nominated to the Rajya Sabha?</h5>  <p>Only prominent people who have contributed to the fields of art, literature, science, etc., can be nominated to the RS. Such a system was introduced so that prominent people in their fields could share their knowledge with other members of the parliament and help make laws that could benefit the people of India.
Recently, the President of India nominated four prominent people to the RS. Let’s look at who they are and why they deserve to be nominated to the RS.
</p> <h5>Who are the four people nominated to the Rajya Sabha?</h5>  <p>They are Ilaiyaraaja (Music), PT Usha (Sports), Veerendra Heggade (Social Work), and V. Vijayendra Prasad (Cinema). Each of them has achieved great success in their respective fields. They will remain members of the RS till 2028.
Ilaiyaraaja is a music composer from Tamil Nadu. He is considered one of the greatest music composers in India. He has won five national film awards along with various other international awards.
PT Usha is a retired track and field athlete from Kerala. She is called the 'Queen of Indian track and field' due to her strong performances at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and winning four gold medals at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.
Veerendra Heggade is a social worker. He has established various educational institutes in rural parts of Karnataka along with other rural development projects.
V. Vijayendra Kumar is a screenwriter and film director from Telangana. He was a part of successful films like ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Bahubali’ franchise, ‘RRR’, etc. His script for the movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ also won the Filmfare Award for having the best story.</p> <h5>What can we expect from these four new Rajya Sabha members?</h5>  <p>The expectation from nominated members is to help the parliament make better laws. Unfortunately, some of the members nominated in the past have a poor record. That’s because they were rarely present and barely participated in the working of the RS.
