Who has been named the youngest French Prime Minister?

French President Emmanuel Macron picked Gabriel Attal as the next Prime Minister (PM) of the country. Gabriel Attal is only 34 years old, making him the youngest PM in modern French history.

Gabriel Attal's appointment as PM is really special. Not only is he the youngest French PM, but he's also the first openly gay PM in the country's history.

Gabriel Attal, son of Yves Attal and Marie de Couriss, grew up in Paris with his three sisters. He is well-educated and got interested in politics early in life. He joined the Socialist Party in 2006.

Later, in 2016, he left and joined Emmanuel Macron's new party, La République En Marche (LREM). At just 29 years old, he became the Secretary of State in the education ministry. He has also been involved in campaigns against bullying.

Why was Gabriel Attal appointed as prime minister?

Gabriel Attal is an ally of Emmanuel Macron. Attal served as the government's spokesperson during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also one of the country's most popular politicians.

The appointment comes at a time when Macron has faced challenges in managing the parliament after losing his absolute majority in 2022. He hopes that with Attal’s appointment, things will get better, and he can help re-energise Macron’s government.
