Who is GM Gukesh?
Dommaraju Gukesh, also known as Gukesh D, is a chess grandmaster (GM) and prodigy from India. He became the third-youngest person in history to become GM (when he was only 13!). At 16, he became the youngest player to defeat world champion Magnus Carlsen in a game in 2022.
In July 2023, he broke another record by becoming the youngest chess player to cross the 2,750 mark in the Elo ratings, breaking the previous record held by Carlsen. The 17-year-old also made another record recently.

For the first time in 36 years, Viswanathan Anand will not be the top-ranked Indian when FIDE releases its monthly rankings in September. Gukesh D. will end the month as the top-ranked Indian.
Gukesh D. achieved this milestone by defeating Mistradin Iskandarov from Azerbaijan during the FIDE World Cup in Baku. This will be the first time he enters the top 10 on the end-of-month ratings list.
Viswanathan Anand is the first Indian GM. So, moving past him in the FIDE rankings was not an easy task for GM Gukesh. We are very proud of him and hope his future in world chess is even brighter.
