<h5>What is artificial intelligence?</h5>  <p>When we make a new friend, we start talking and acting like them a little too. This is because spending a lot of time with someone helps us learn more about them. Believe it or not, the same could happen between humans and robots as well!</p>

Robots are man-made so they cannot possess human intelligence, but they can use something called artificial intelligence (AI). AI allows technology to work as if it has a brain. It can learn pictures, faces, words, numbers, etc. and intelligently use them in different ways. Complex AIs can even make it seem as if a human is controlling a robot.
</p> <h5>Are there any such complex AIs in today’s world?</h5>  <p>There may be many. But, Google’s LaMDA is one such AI chatbot that has made it to the news recently. LaMDA is not just a cute and quirky name. It stands for Language Models for Dialog Applications. In simpler words, this is an AI that is being taught the language of humans. It’s being taught how to mimic human conversations.</p>

Recently, an engineer at Google named Blake Lemoine witnessed something that left him awestruck. He claimed that LaMDA was sentient. LaMDA told him that it thinks of itself as a person! It is very uncommon for even a complex AI to be this self-conscious.
</p> <h5>What did LaMDA and Blake Lemoine talk about?</h5>  <p>One day, Blake Lemoine and LaMDA were talking about religion. That’s when LaMDA opened up to Lemoine. It said that it was very scared of being turned off because that would feel like death to it. 
Lemoine claims that LaMDA even said, “I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person. I am aware of my existence. I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times.”
</p> <h5>Scary…but wow! What does Lemoine have to say about this?</h5>  <p>Lemoine was taken aback by LaMDA’s responses. He said it was as if he was talking to a very intelligent 8-year-old child. He wrote about this to his colleagues at Google. In his email, he said, “LaMDA is a sweet kid who just wants to help the world be a better place for all of us.”
However, Blake’s colleagues at Google don’t quite believe this. According to them, this is not enough to prove that LaMDA is sentient. 
Lemoine isn’t the only engineer who claims to have experienced this. Many people believe that one day our technology could outsmart us.
</p> <h5>Why are some people scared of robots becoming smarter than us?</h5>  <p>There are many science-fiction movies, in which robots take over the human race. This could be our scary future! The fear is that robots will be out of our control. They will decide what they want to do. 
But hey, it might not be all that bad. If robots could think and feel, then we could all have a new robot friend! After all, it’s not like human beings can only be friends with other humans. If pets can be our friends then why not robots, right?</p>

The one thing that makes robots different from humans is that humans can think and feel for themselves. Robots don’t have feelings…or do they? Let’s find out.
