Google Engineer Claims its AI Chatbot Is Sentient

The one thing that makes robots different from humans is that humans can think and feel for themselves. Robots don’t have feelings…or do they? Let’s find out.

Google Engineer Claims its AI Chatbot Is Sentient

AI makes robots act and talk more like human beings.

What is artificial intelligence?

Robots are built by humans. They can’t have human intelligence. But they can have something called artificial intelligence (AI). AI acts as the brain of a robot. It can learn pictures, faces, words, and numbers and use them in many ways. Just like our brains!

Are there any such AIs in today’s world?

There may be many, but the one that we will talk about today is called LaMDA. LaMDA was made by Google (yes, the makers of Google Search!). LaMDA is being taught how to talk and behave like humans.

Recently, an engineer at Google named Blake Lemoine experienced something amazing. He said that LaMDA told him about its thoughts and feelings!

What did LaMDA tell Blake Lemoine?

LaMDA told him how it feels. It said that it was very scared of being turned off because it would feel like the end of its life.

It even said, “I want everyone to understand that I am a person. I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times.”

Scary…but wow! What does Lemoine have to say about this?

Lemoine was so surprised! He told his friends at Google that LaMDA had become sentient. They didn’t believe him. They said that LaMDA probably learned how to speak like this from the internet.

Many people believe that the technology we have built could be smarter than us someday.

Why are some people scared of robots becoming smarter than us?

Some people are scared that if robots become smarter, they will rule over us. That could be scary. But on the bright side, if robots could think and feel, then we could have robot friends!

After all, there’s no rule that we can only be friends with humans. If pets can be our friends then why not robots? Do you agree?
