<h5>Animals also suffer from heat!</h5><p>With the summer season setting in, temperatures are soaring across India. It is impacting not only humans but also various birds, mammals, reptiles, etc.</p><p>Animals and birds can also fall sick due to the heat. They face problems finding water as natural water sources dry up. Elephants require large amounts of fresh water for their well-being. During summer, they might not get enough water, which can affect them.</p><p>Snakes and other reptiles may seek shelter inside someone’s home to survive the heat. This can cause safety risks for people.</p><p>Thankfully, the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) in Odisha has devised ways to protect its animals from the scorching heat.</p><h5>Wow! Photo by The New Indian Express.</figcaption></figure><p>NZP is using air coolers, sprinklers, and ice water to provide relief to the animals during the summer heat. The staff has been asked to monitor the animals and report any behavioural changes to the zoo hospital.</p><p>The animals are being provided with air coolers, water sprinklers, a running water pool, and ice baths according to their needs. Their enclosures are also covered with bamboo sheds to give them shade, and they are also being given lots of drinking water.</p><p>The zoo animals are being fed high-water content fruits like watermelon, sugarcane, cucumber, etc., along with their regular diets to keep them hydrated. Isn’t this awesome?</p><p>NZP has also made arrangements for visitors to keep cool. It has 14 drinking water stations in various locations for zoo visitors. More are being added.</p><h5>How to help animals during the summer?</h5><p>You can keep a bowl of water and some food outside your house for the street dogs and cats. Keep your pets indoors during the hottest part of the day to avoid heatstroke and provide them with ample drinking water.</p><p>You can also keep a bowl of water on your balcony railing for birds like pigeons, crows, sparrows, etc., to drink from.</p><p>Stray animals tend to sleep under the shade of cars during the summers, so make sure you ask your parents to check there’s no animal underneath before they start their vehicle.</p><p>You can also spread awareness regarding how to help animals during the summer months and encourage your friends, parents, and neighbours to protect animals.</p><p>But also remember - never approach a stray animal without an adult.</p>
