What rules have been announced by the government?

To get admission into good engineering or medical colleges, many students join coaching centres at a young age. The Ministry of Education has established rules for these centres.

Coaching centres must hire teachers with at least a graduate degree and no criminal records. They cannot make false promises like guaranteed good marks and rankings by attending their institutes. They cannot admit students below 16 years of age. They can’t create fake advertisements about coaching quality, facilities, or student results.

Centres must maintain an updated website with information on tutors, courses, fees, etc. Fees should be reasonable, and refunds must be given. Centres must be registered and have safety measures like CCTV and first-aid kits.

Coaching classes should not be held during school hours. Both students and tutors must have weekly offs, and there should be no exams on the day after the weekly off. A complaint system is also in place for everyone to raise concerns. Coaching centres will face punishment for breaking any of these rules announced by the Ministry of Education.

What is the reason behind issuing such rules?

The rules have been made to control private coaching centres' unregulated growth and create laws to manage them. This also comes at a time when there have been complaints about student suicides, fire incidents, and a lack of facilities in coaching centres.

What are the reactions to these rules?

Many coaching centres say the new rules will put more pressure on students, lead to job losses for teachers, and create monetary problems for the centres. They say that a lot of students preparing for engineering and medical exams are younger than 16. These exams are tough, and starting late might make it difficult to get ready.

The rules might also affect the coaching centre business, as students under 16 will not be allowed to join. The head of the All India Parents Association thinks the rules will help reduce pressure on kids. Some students believe it should be up to the kids to decide if they can handle the extra pressure or not.
