What is The News?
On May 24, 2025, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the monsoon had started in Kerala.
This happened eight days earlier than the usual date of June 1. It is the earliest monsoon in many years.
What is The Monsoon?
The monsoon is a weather pattern, or a season, that brings heavy rain and wind to India from June to September.
It gives most of the rain we get each year, more than about 70%! This rain is very important to India.
Why is Monsoon So Important?
Monsoon is important for everyone in many ways.
Farmers need monsoon rain to grow food crops like rice, cotton, and pulses (dals). Crops may not grow good without it.
The rain also fills rivers, lakes, and dams. People need this water to drink, cook, and create electricity.
A good monsoon helps farmers, people in cities, and the entire country.
How Does IMD Know Monsoon Has Started?
To know that the monsoon has arrived, IMD looks at three main things.
First, they check the rainfall. It must rain at least 2.5 mm in most parts of Kerala for two days.
Second, they look at the wind. The wind should blow from the west, bringing rain clouds.
Third, they study the clouds and the sea. They look at cloud shapes and sea temperatures to make sure it's the monsoon.
Why Did Monsoon Come Early This Year?
This year, different things happened to bring the monsoon early.
The Arabian Sea became warm quickly, and rain clouds appeared early. The westerly winds that bring the rain also started blowing at the right time.
These signs told scientists that the monsoon was ready.
What Does This Mean?
An early monsoon could be helpful for everyone. Farmers get more time to plant, and there is enough water for everyone.
However, it can also bring strong winds and heavy rain. This can cause problems in some places.
This early monsoon brings hope, but we all must stay safe and prepared.
