<h5>What is Israel’s Iron Dome?</h5><p>The Iron Dome is a short-range ground-to-air air defence system. It consists of a radar and missiles that track and destroy any rockets, missiles, aircraft, etc. sent towards Israel. It was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, an Israeli company, in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries.</p><p>It can be used in any weather conditions, both at night and during the day. It can defend Israel from rockets launched within 40-45 miles (64-72 km).</p><p>When a rocket approaches, a radar detector identifies it and sends the information about its speed and course to the control system. The computers then determine if the rocket will strike a populated area. If this is the case, a radar-guided missile is launched, which destroys the incoming rocket.</p><p>The Iron Dome system has a 96% success rate. Photo by BBC News Somali.</figcaption></figure><p>On 7 October 2023, Hamas (a Palestinian militant group) fired over 5,000 rockets towards Israel from the Gaza Strip while its members entered Israel’s borders. Thus, the Iron Dome system faced 5,000 rockets in just 20 minutes.</p><p>While it destroyed many of them, some rockets managed to breach the defence system and hit Israeli territory. It was founded in 1987 in response to Israel's occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. Israel and a majority of Western nations, including the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, the European Union, etc., have designated Hamas as a terrorist organisation. While Hamas accuse Israel of oppressing Palestinians, Israel accuses Hamas of kidnapping Israeli nationals.</p><p>Like many other Middle Eastern groups, Hamas remains angry about Israel's creation after World War II (WWII). Hamas and other Palestinian parties claim that the area was stolen from the Palestinian people to make Israel. However, supporters of Israel claim that the region is the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people.</p><p>Israel also occupied the Gaza Strip and the West Bank during one of the wars. While Israel left Gaza in 2005, it continues to occupy the West Bank to this day. Later, Hamas came to power in the Gaza Strip. After that, there has been an ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.</p><p>Hamas also seeks the destruction of Israel. The recent attack was carried out after Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem a few days ago. This mosque is sacred for Palestinians.</p>
