<h5>Why are baby care products important?</h5>  <p>You must have seen special products made for babies in the supermarket. These may include baby food, baby shampoo, baby oil and so on. These products are made especially for babies because they are very sensitive. They don’t have much resilience against diseases, dust or infections like adults do. </p>
<p>Parents of babies carefully choose the materials that their babies wear, the food they eat and the medicines they use. Many parents choose baby products because they are supposed to be gentle and harmless.</p>
<p>But what if some of these “gentle” products are doing more harm than good? Johnson and Johnson (J&J) is a company that makes many baby products. It is a trusted baby care brand for many parents. For many years now, J&J has been getting in trouble for their baby powder. 
</p> <h5>What’s wrong with Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder?</h5>  <p>Johnson and Johnson has faced as many as 38,000 lawsuits from their customers. Many of them claim that their baby powder has caused them to develop cancer.</p>
<p>Johnson’s baby powder contains talcum (talc). Talc is the softest mineral in the world and it is used in baby products like powder. It keeps skin dry and prevents rashes. Talcum powder is safe to use.</p>
<p>However, it becomes a problem when talc is accompanied by another mineral called asbestos. A small amount of asbestos may get accidentally mixed with products that contain talc. Even a minuscule amount of asbestos can make people very sick and even cause cancer.
</p> <h5>So…did their talcum powder contain asbestos?</h5>  <p>Over the years, Johnson and Johnson has been very clear that its baby powder does not cause cancer. However, in October 2019, J&J recalled 33,000 bottles of baby powder after traces of asbestos were found in one bottle.
According to an investigation in 2018, it was found that J&J knew that a small amount of asbestos was present in their products from as early as 1971. This was discovered by investigators who looked into the company's reports and other confidential documents.

      </figure> <p>Johnson and Johnson has decided to stop making baby powder containing talc. Instead, they will be selling baby powder made from cornstarch.</p>
<p>The pharmaceutical company says that they will discontinue their talc-based baby powder throughout the world from 2023. They had earlier discontinued the powder in USA and Canada in 2020.</p>
<p>The reason they gave for its discontinuation was that the baby powder was attracting too many lawsuits from consumers. The company has had to pay $3.5 billion to consumers in lawsuits so far. So, to save themselves this cost, they decided to discontinue their talc-based powder altogether. 
</p> <h5>What can we learn from this?</h5>  <p>Many parents trusted Johnson and Johnson to create gentle products to help take care of their babies. This finding shows us that we shouldn’t blindly trust any brand or company. It may even be harmful to us.
We should try our best to look through the ingredients of the products that we buy, especially when we’re shopping for a new self-care product. Let’s all be smart consumers!</p>
