<h5>What are assembly elections?</h5><p>The most visible sign in a democratic nation is the election. Elections are held in India to determine the leaders who will lead the country and the states. The people of the country can vote for a candidate of their choice. The winner is the candidate who receives the most votes.</p><p>Assembly elections are those elections that are held in each Indian state to elect members to the state legislative assembly. These elections are held every five years. They may be held earlier if an assembly is dissolved before it completes its full term. During these elections, people vote to pick their representatives, who will form the state's government.</p><p>The political party winning the maximum votes forms the government. Generally, the party’s leader becomes the state's Chief Minister. The assembly elections play a crucial role in shaping the state's economic growth and the lives of its residents. Assembly elections in the state of Karnataka are being held today.</p><h5>When did the Karnataka elections begin?</h5><p>Karnataka assembly elections are taking place today i.e., 10th May 2023. The state's three major parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) are doing everything possible to win the election. The results of this election will be announced on 13th May 2023.</p><p>The present Karnataka government's term is set to end on 24th May 2023. The previous assembly elections took place in May 2018. In 2018, the JDS gained 37 seats. BJP fell short by nine seats to win the election. JDS formed a partnership with Congress to form the state’s government.</p><p>However, the partnership lasted only 15 months. Certain JDS MLAs joined the BJP. So, the previous government lost its majority, and since then, BJP has been running the state.</p><h5>What promises have the parties made?</h5><p>The BJP has promised below-poverty line (BPL) households 5 kg of food grains per month, three free cooking gas cylinders per year, and half a litre of milk daily. Congress has promised 10 kg of rice per month to each member of a BPL family. They will also increase milk subsidies for farmers from Rs 5 to Rs 7 per litre.</p><p>Congress has promised free bus rides for women in Karnataka on government bus routes. It has also promised Rs 2,000 per month to every woman head of a family.
