Katy Perry will go to space with an all-female crew!
Blue Origin is a space company from the USA. It will send its first all-women crew to space. The last time this happened was in 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union went to space alone.
Six women will go on an 11-minute space flight. The flight will reach the Karman Line on the New Shepard spacecraft. It will happen on April 14, 2025. This is Blue Origin’s 11th flight with people.
The crew includes singer Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, movie producer Kerianne Flynn, and pilot Lauren Sanchez.
What is the Karman Line?
The Karman Line is 100 kilometres above the Earth. It is the line between Earth’s air and space.
Airplanes cannot fly this high. They need air to stay in the sky, but there is not enough air at the Karman Line. So, rockets are needed to go past this line.
Most people around the world accept this as the start of space. But NASA and the US military say space starts at 80 kilometres.
What will the crew do?
The New Shepard flight takes 10 to 12 minutes.
When the rocket reaches the Karman Line, the crew’s capsule separates. Then, the crew can feel weightless and see Earth from space.
They can undo their seatbelts and move inside the capsule. The capsule has six big windows to look outside.
After the highest point, the capsule falls back to Earth. A parachute opens to slow it down before it lands in the ocean.
The rocket comes back by itself, and a ship takes the capsule so the crew can come out.
Let’s wish the all-female crew a fun and safe trip to space!
