What major diplomatic win has India achieved?

Recently, eight former Indian Navy veterans who were arrested in Qatar in 2022 have been released. They were given the death penalty in October 2023 but are now free. Seven of them have returned to India.

This situation became a big problem between India and Qatar. Their release represents a significant diplomatic victory for the country.

The eight Indian nationals worked for a company called Al Dahra when they were arrested in August 2022. They were accused of spying on a submarine programme and put in jail. In October 2023, they were sentenced to death.

Later, India requested that their sentences be changed. India's request was accepted, and the punishments were reduced to prison terms. Finally, they have been released following a pardon by Qatar's Emir. The Indian government and its top officials worked really hard to ensure their freedom.

What does this show about India's diplomacy?

This situation shows how India handled a tricky international problem with smart diplomacy. Despite tensions with Qatar, India's diplomatic efforts led to the reduction of death sentences to prison terms and the eventual release of the victims. This is a big win for India's diplomacy and a happy moment for the eight people and their families.
