<h5>How many children face water scarcity worldwide?</h5><p>Climate change is affecting the planet and the world’s children. A UNICEF report titled “The Climate Changed Child” says 1 in every three children, or 739 million children worldwide, live in places with high or very high water scarcity. These regions have limited water resources, high seasonal fluctuations, and the risk associated with groundwater decline or drought.</p><p>Also, 436 million children face burdens of high or very high water scarcity and low or very low drinking water service levels, also known as extreme water vulnerability. This is putting their lives, health, and well-being in danger. This high water vulnerability is causing many avoidable diseases, particularly among children under five.</p><p>Children in low and middle-income nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central and Southern Asia, and Eastern and South-Eastern Asia are most affected. Niger, Jordan, Burkina Faso, Yemen, Chad, and Namibia are among the worst affected countries.</p><p>It also highlights other ways children face the impact of climate change, like sickness, air pollution, floods, etc. The report was released days before the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/india-presents-a-plan-to-help-save-the-environment-at-cop27">Conference of the Parties</a> (COP) 28 climate change summit, which will begin on 30th November 2023 in the United Arab Emirates.</p><h5>What does the report say about protecting children?</h5><p>Investments must be made to provide safe drinking water and sanitation services. This will act as a first line of defence in protecting children from the effects of climate change. Governments must also provide a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment to safeguard children.</p>
