How many children were rescued?

Recently, four young kids were rescued from the Amazon rainforest. They were missing for over a month and were found 40 days after a plane crash. The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, shared the news on Twitter. This made the whole country and the world very happy.

After they were rescued, doctors checked the kids before taking them to the capital city, Bogota. President Petro mentioned that the kids were weak and needed food. Their physical and mental health is being examined at the military hospital.

How did the four children go missing?

The four kids, aged thirteen, nine, four, and one, were the only ones who survived a terrible plane crash on 1st May 2023. Sadly, their mom and the two pilots didn't make it (there were no other passengers since it was a small plane).

The bodies of the grown-ups were found at the crash site. But the siblings managed to get out of the broken plane and went into the rainforest, hoping to find help. After they went missing, the military started a search operation to find them.

How was the military-led search operation conducted?

The Colombian military and the local people searched a lot to find the kids. The family said the oldest child knew about the forest, so they hoped the kids could stay safe. The search team found small footprints, which meant the children might still be alive in the rainforest.

They used helicopters to send a message in the children's mother tongue, asking them to stop moving so they could be found. They also dropped food boxes from helicopters into the jungle, hoping the kids would find and eat them.

But even after weeks, there was no sign of the children. People started losing hope, but the search continued. Luckily, there was good news. The kids were found in an open area without trees. The authorities rescued them after hearing the youngest child crying.

How did the kids survive in the jungle?

The children survived by eating cassava flour and fruits they found in the jungle. Right after the plane crashed, they grabbed some food from the broken plane. They ate that for the first few days and later found fruits to eat.

Luckily, the military came and rescued the four kids. The officials said that the oldest child, a girl, knew how to stay safe in the rainforest. She took care of the other kids until they were found and brought to a safe place.
