Who has issued a ban on Patanjali medicine ads?

The Supreme Court (SC) of India recently passed an interim order banning Patanjali Ayurved's ads for its medicines. The court said Patanjali fooled people by saying its medicines can cure certain diseases, like diabetes, blood pressure, etc., without proof.

The SC also said Patanjali cannot say bad things about other kinds of medicine. In November 2023, the court told Patanjali to stop its false ads right away or pay big fines. But Patanjali kept showing the ads. The court was angry at Patanjali's founders, Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, for this.

At first, the court wanted to stop all Patanjali ads. But Patanjali's lawyer said they sell toothpaste and other things too. So, the court only stopped ads for medicines that claimed to cure certain diseases. The court also criticised the central government.

What has the Supreme Court said to the central government?

The Supreme Court criticised the central government for not stopping Patanjali's false ads, despite a petition filed on the subject in 2022.

The court also asked what the Ministry of Ayush has done about it since then. The court has issued all these orders while hearing a petition.

Who had filed the petition?

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) filed the petition in 2022. They wanted to stop negative ads against vaccines and modern medicines. The IMA also said Patanjali spread fake news about COVID-19 vaccines and modern medicines.
