What is mental health?

Mental health refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how people feel, behave, think, and communicate with others. Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood and teenage to old age.

There is no one cause of mental health issues. Age, loneliness (remember to talk to your friends), bad experiences from the past, etc., can all affect one's mental health. Recently, researchers have discovered that birdsong is good for mental health.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf have found that birdsong can lower anxiety and paranoia. They published their findings in the journal "Scientific Reports."

The researchers looked at how urban (traffic noise) and natural (birdsong) noises affected mood, paranoia, and cognitive function.

How was the research conducted?

The researchers did an online experiment on 295 people. For 6 minutes, they were made to listen to one of four types of sounds: low traffic noise, loud traffic noise, low birdsong, and loud birdsong.

This study found that listening to birdsong reduces anxiety and paranoia in healthy people. However, birdsong did not appear to affect depressed moods. It was also found that traffic noise often increased depressed moods.

The researchers also discovered that neither birdsong nor traffic noise affected cognitive function.

Why is this research important?

This study is important because birdsong can now be used to prevent mental illnesses. They can be made easily available via audio CDs or other websites such as YouTube, Spotify, etc. Based on the findings of this study, more studies can be done to better treat mental illness.
