What mystery has been uncovered by scientists?
Many big whales in the ocean make songs or sounds. Scientists recently learned how they sing.
Humpback whales and other baleen whales have a special 'voice box' or larynx for singing underwater. This allows whales to sing by recycling air while preventing water inhalation.
The scientists' study was published in a journal called Nature. The study shows that whales may produce a wide range of noises, including moans, clicks, whistles, etc. It also explains why the noises we make in the ocean bother these animals.
Why is the noise generated in the ocean so disruptive for whales?
Sound is super important for whales because it's how they find each other in the ocean. Scientists found that the noises whales make are in the same frequency range as the noises ships make.
This means loud ships might make it hard for whales to communicate, find friends, and get food. It could even make travelling tough for them.
What needs to be done to ensure noise generated in the ocean doesn’t affect whales?
The study said we need to make ships quieter and have fewer ships around where whales live. It also highlighted that we should also protect areas where many vocalising whales live.
If we do these things, whales can live peacefully and survive on this planet.
