Scotland is working on a new law that could send bosses of big polluters to jail for up to 20 years. This law is called the Ecocide Prevention Bill, and it might be introduced this year. It’s designed to protect the environment by punishing those who cause serious damage.

What is ecocide?

Ecocide is when people cause big harm to nature, like oil spills or cutting down too many trees. It’s a way to describe major environmental damage.

Who is behind the bill?

Monica Lennon, a Scottish politician, proposed this bill. It has support from different political groups, and the government won’t stop it from being discussed in Parliament next year.

Why is this important?

If this law is passed, Scotland will be the first in the United Kingdom (UK) to have such strict rules. Belgium already has similar laws, and some people want the International Criminal Court to include ecocide as a crime, just like genocide and war crimes.
