<h5>What is the Taliban?</h5>  <p>Not too long ago, we published an article on how the Taliban had taken control of Afghanistan. Here’s a quick recap! The Taliban is a group of terrorists who recently came back to power in Afghanistan. They practise a violent and cruel form of Islam. </p>

The Taliban believe that women should not be educated, hold jobs or even step out of their homes alone. Even the justice system that they follow is cruel and violent. After they came to power, it soon became clear that a reign of terror had begun in Afghanistan.
</p> <h5>If they’re so bad, how did they even come to power again?</h5>  <p>The army of the United States had been keeping Afghanistan safe from the Taliban. When they left in 2021, the Taliban acted quickly and overthrew the government. </p>

This time the Taliban promised that they would respect women’s rights and allow them to study and work. Most people found this hard to swallow, and guess what, they were right.
</p> <h5>Did the Taliban keep any of its promises?</h5>  <p>Nope. Soon after they came to power, the Taliban declared that women were not allowed to drive cars or even study beyond class six. </p>

<p>Recently, the Taliban has mandated all women wear burqas. Many Muslim women choose to wear a burqa. However, the problem here is that the Taliban has taken away their right to choose whether or not to wear one. If a woman is caught disobeying this order, then a male member of her family will be sent to prison.</p>
<p>The Taliban also mandated that women not be allowed to go outdoors without being accompanied by a man.
</p> <h5>How are Afghan women reacting to this ban?</h5>  <p>Afghan women are furious, and rightly so! After twenty years of studying, working, driving, and having the freedom to live the way they want to, they are now being pushed into doing things they don’t want to. 
At least two protests took place in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, where women took to the streets to express their anger at the Taliban. One protestor said, “We want to be known as living creatures, we want to be known as human beings, not slaves imprisoned in the corner of the house.”
Malala Yousufzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban for wanting to go to school, said, “I am asking leaders around the world to take collective action to hold the Taliban accountable for violating the human rights of millions of women and girls.”</p>
<p>The Taliban were defeated once. Here’s hoping that someday they’ll be defeated again. Meanwhile, we can continue rooting for these heroic Afghan women from afar.
