What problem did the British leave India with?

British India was divided into two parts. The first was states run by the British. The second was states run by princes (known as the Princely States). Princes also accepted the British as their rulers. When the British would leave India, all 545 Princely States would become different countries.

How was India formed?

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then Prime Minister convinced rulers of Princely States to become a part of unified India. It helped him to know that people staying in the Princely States also wanted democracy. They would get this if they became a part of India. By August 1947, almost all states had signed a document called the ‘Instrument of Accession’.

Were there any problems to unify India?

Some states like Hyderabad, Kashmir, and Manipur took more time to become a part of unified India. The ruler of Hyderabad attacked his own people who were rebelling against him. This forced him to sign the Instrument of Accession. Before Manipur became a part of India, different groups in the state were against Manipur becoming a part of India.
