<h5>Which tunnel collapsed in Uttarakhand?</h5><p>On the morning of 12th November 2023, an under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand collapsed. The tunnel is located in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district. Forty-one workers building the tunnel became trapped when a section of the tunnel collapsed. The disaster happened around 200 metres away from its entrance.</p><p>The tunnel was being constructed on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway between Silkyara and Dandalgaon. The Silkyara tunnel is part of the Chardham project of the Ministry of Road Transport &amp; Highways. While initial media reports said the tunnel collapse occurred due to a landslide, officials say an investigation is ongoing.</p><p>The tunnel was being built to help Char Dham pilgrims save an hour of travel time by avoiding steep, rocky, and narrow roads where accidents and landslides could happen. The alleged landslide caused debris to fall on the tunnel, causing it to collapse. The debris mounds cut off the workers' oxygen supply.</p><h5>What’s the current condition of the workers?</h5><p>Officials said the men were stuck 200m within the tunnel but were unharmed. Authorities have established contact with the trapped workers. They are being sent food, water, oxygen, and medicines using a pipeline laid to deliver water to the tunnel for construction work.</p><p>Six pipes have also been fitted to provide the workers with food and oxygen. However, it's been too long since they were trapped inside. However, on the afternoon of 17th November 2023, when 24m had been drilled, a big cracking sound was heard in the tunnel. Rescue operations were suspended soon after.</p><p>The Union government held a meeting the next day and came up with five different plans to rescue the workers. These include drilling from one end of the tunnel to the other, vertical drilling, perpendicular drilling, etc.</p><p>Experts from Norway and Thailand are also being consulted to help with the tough rescue mission. Let’s hope the workers are rescued successfully.</p>
