Can we solve one of the biggest environmental challenges?
It's time to become global environmental heroes! Millions of tons of agricultural waste is burned every year, releasing dangerous pollutants into the atmosphere.
After the harvest season, many farmers burn crop stubble (the leftover plant matter such as rice or wheat stalks) as a quick and cost-effective way to clear their fields for the next crop. This practice is common in countries like India, China, the United States, and Russia!
But, the environmental cost of this practice is immense.
When farmers burn crop stubble, harmful gases and tiny particles are released into the air. These include carbon monoxide, methane, and other pollutants. This pollution makes the air dirty, causes breathing problems, creates thick smog, and even contributes to climate change.
What can be a solution to solve the stubble-burning problem? We want you to keep two things in mind:
(a) the solution must reduce or eliminate pollution from stubble burning; and
(b) it must achieve the final objective of clearing the farmers' fields.
