<h5>What kind of sail has been tried out by the cargo ship?</h5><p>In August 2023, a cargo ship named Pyxis Ocean started its maiden journey. The interesting thing about the ship is that it is partially powered by wind. This ship has been fitted with two WindWings, which are 37.5 metres (123 feet) tall sails.</p><p>The ship belongs to the Mitsubishi Corporation but has been hired by a company named Cargill. They can also be folded away with the push of a button. The system is automated, making it simple and safe to use. No extra crew members are required to handle it.</p><p>The WindWings can be configured to be attached to vessels of different sizes. The components are also made of high-quality, long-lasting materials.</p><p>The WindWing can also be raised and lowered. In fact, each part of it can be moved in different directions to catch the wind. Normally, the Pyxis Ocean does use fossil fuel, but the amount is relatively less due to wind power.</p><h5>How can WindWings help reduce pollution?</h5><p>The shipping industry releases a lot of pollutants every year (e.g. carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, black carbon, etc.), which harms the environment. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims for the shipping industry to reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. IMO identifies the wind as an important source of energy that can reduce emissions in the shipping industry.</p><p>This is where WindWings come in. It can help ships save fuel and reduce their harmful emissions. Wind power can also help reduce the expenses of running a ship.</p><p>The WindWing project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The performance of WindWings will be studied in the next few months. Based on the study, further improvements will be made to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save the environment.</p>
