What kind of sail has been tried out by the cargo ship?

In August 2023, a cargo ship named Pyxis Ocean began its first trip. What's cool about this ship is that it can use the wind to help it move. This ship has been fitted with two WindWings, which are 37.5 metres (123 feet) tall sails.

This ship belongs to a company called Mitsubishi Corporation but has been hired by a company called Cargill. Cargill wanted to reduce pollution from their ships, so they came up with the idea of WindWings.

The WindWings are designed to be very easy to use. They can be put on the ship's deck easily. They can also be folded up with the push of a button. The system is automated, making it simple and safe to use. No extra crew members are required to handle it.

The WindWings can be designed to fit various types of vessels. They're made from strong stuff that lasts a long time. The WindWing can also be raised and lowered, and its parts can be moved around to catch the wind.

How can WindWings help reduce pollution?

The shipping industry mainly powers itself through fossil fuels. This ends up releasing a lot of pollutants, which harms the environment. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) wants the shipping industry to release 50% less greenhouse gases by 2050. Wind power can help with this.

This is where WindWings come in. WindWings help ship owners use the wind to move their ships, reducing pollutants and saving fuel. Wind power can reduce the expenses of running a ship.

The performance of the WindWings will be studied in the next few months. Based on the study, further improvements will be made to WindWings that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save the environment.
