<h5>Birthdays in class!</h5><p>Isn't it remarkable when we celebrate someone's birthday in class? It's an occasion for free toffees and chocolates (some desk banging and singing too) for all of us.</p><p>However, a peculiar incident took place in a school located in Hyderabad. Some students declined to accept chocolates from their classmate on his birthday. Isn't that confusing?</p><h5>Who refuses chocolates from friends?</h5><p>It's totally fine not to eat chocolates if they have stuff one is allergic to, like nuts. But that's not what happened here!</p><p>In this case, students refused to eat chocolates because they were being handed out by a Muslim classmate. They said that they don’t eat ‘halal’ things. These students claimed that their parents said not to eat anything given to them by people of that religion.</p><h5>Huh…what are halal things?</h5><p>Muslims follow specific rules about what they can and cannot eat. For example, they’re not allowed to eat pork or drink alcohol. Anything Muslims can eat without breaking these rules is referred to as ‘halal.’</p><p>The Cadbury chocolates being distributed did not contain anything that Muslims could not eat. This means that all the chocolates were as halal as water, apples, or even bananas!</p><h5>Such a sad situation.</h5><p>The birthday boy only wanted to celebrate his special day with his classmates. But what happened was an awful example of religious discrimination. Imagine how hurt the birthday boy must have felt!</p><p>Article 15 of The Constitution of India disallows anyone from discriminating against any person because of their religious beliefs, caste, gender, etc. India is a secular country. Anyone’s religious preference is a deeply personal matter.</p><p>We must never treat anyone differently based on what religion they follow. This applies to everyone around us, including children and grown-ups. We are all humans and deserve to be treated respectfully and equally.</p>
