Summit begins.
The Conference of Parties to the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), also called CBD COP16, started on 21st October 2024 in Cali, Colombia. It will end on 1st November 2024.
People from almost 200 countries are coming together to discuss a super important topic: biodiversity conservation.
This year's theme is “Peace With Nature.” Isn’t that cool? Everyone is working as a team to protect trees, animals, and all the amazing things that live on Earth. They want to ensure we can enjoy nature today and for many years.
Let’s cheer for everyone helping to keep our planet safe!

Plans for COP16.
COP16 follows a plan called the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) to reach its goals. This plan was created at COP15 in Canada to stop the loss of our beautiful plants and animals by 2030.
At this meeting, leaders are talking about fixing damaged lands and waters and making sure the voices of indigenous people are heard. They want to protect 30% of our planet’s land and water by 2030.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is encouraging all countries to make plans to stop habitat loss and save endangered animals. He believes everyone must work together to help achieve the GBF's goals!
About Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Biodiversity is super important because it provides food and clean water. However, human activities are harming it, which is bad for the environment and our future.
The GBF was created to help. It has 23 targets to reach by 2030 and 4 goals to meet by 2050.
By 2030, they want to:
- Manage all areas to stop biodiversity loss.
- Fix 30% of all damaged ecosystems.
- Protect 30% of the planet's land, water, and seas.
- Stop animals from going extinct and manage human-wildlife conflicts.
- Reduce pollution and fight climate change.
By 2050, they want to:
- Restore natural ecosystems.
- Sustainably use biodiversity and invest in protecting it.
These efforts will help save biodiversity for now and the future.
