<h5>The cyclone is approaching which Indian states?</h5><p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the depression over the Bay of Bengal has grown into a cyclonic storm. It has been named ‘Michaung.’ It is expected to move parallelly along north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts and is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on 5th December 2023.</p><p>It might have a maximum wind speed of 80-90 kmph, reaching up to 100 kmph. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has said heavy rain and strong winds are expected over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts until the night of 4th December 2023.</p><p>A heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been given for Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The storm can also bring severe rainfall to most of southern Odisha and Andhra Pradesh’s coastal regions. Photo by ANI.</figcaption></figure><p>The central government is in touch with the state governments to help with relief and rescue measures once <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/warnings-issued-as-cyclone-biparjoy-approaches">Cyclone</a> Michaung makes landfall. Eighteen teams have been deployed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to Tamil Nadu (TN), Andhra Pradesh (AP), Odisha, and Puducherry. An additional ten teams are on standby.</p><p>All schools in Andhra Pradesh have been closed today. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday in four districts: Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. The TN state government has taken over 400 private marriage halls to keep families affected by the severe weather conditions.</p><p>Emergency food supplies are being prepared in the state. Many trains have also been cancelled by the South Central Railways. Indian defence forces are also helping people. Control rooms have also been set up to monitor the situation. Flights have also been stopped.</p><p>In AP, officials have evacuated nearly 7,000 people in eight coastal districts. Many others are also being planned to be evacuated depending on the cyclone's path and intensity. These are some steps being taken to help the people.</p><h5>What can be done to prepare for cyclones?</h5><p>Before the cyclone hits, people should inspect their homes, tighten loose tiles, and repair doors and windows. Battery-run torches should be kept nearby in case of power outages. In an emergency, one should also keep some dry food that can be stored for long periods.</p><p>If a major cyclone is on its way, the government may order you to evacuate. The government frequently provides shelters. The route to those places must be memorised. Prepare an emergency kit ahead of time as well. These are some steps that can be followed.</p><p>Let’s hope the people of the states do not face any harm.</p>
