What was the previous rule about applying for the exam to become a doctor?

Earlier, the Medical Council of India had a rule that students needed to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology, and English as their main subjects in 11th and 12th grades to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) (NEET-UG) exam.

They had to do this in regular school, not open school or as a private candidate. Also, after finishing Class 12th, students could not study Biology/ Biotechnology or any other needed subject to apply for the exam. The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently changed this rule.

Students who finish their 11th and 12th-grade exams focusing on Physics, Chemistry, and Math can now become doctors. New rules from the NMC allow non-Biology students to take the NEET-UG exam.

The NMC states that students can even study the required subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology, and English) as additional subjects after passing Class 12th from recognised boards. These students are now eligible to appear for the exam. Students already studying the required subjects in Classes 11 and 12 can still take the exam like before.

What is the NEET-UG exam?

NEET-UG is an exam in India for students who finish 12th grade and want to be doctors. It has replaced the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). The National Testing Agency (NTA) organises this exam every year.
