<h5>When does a raid take place?</h5>  <p>Wouldn’t you feel uncomfortable if people came to your house and started going through your stuff? It’s probably no different for politicians. The government can search anyone’s house if they have a good enough reason to do it. </p>
<p>This is exactly what happened to Donald Trump, former President of the United States (US). On 8 August 2022, the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, a resort in Florida, US, owned by Trump. This resort is also his current residence. 
This is the first time in history that the residence of a former president of the US has been searched by the FBI. He was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the raid.</p> <h5>Why did the FBI raid Donald Trump’s residence?</h5>  <p>Donald Trump is being investigated by the FBI because they suspect that he removed or destroyed government documents after he left the White House last year. The raid at Mar-a-Lago was a part of this investigation. </p>

<p>According to American law, all US presidents must hand over all of their work documents and emails to the National Archives (NA) after they leave their post. All these documents belong to the government after the president’s term has finished. </p>
<p>This is usually done because documents and emails of the president often contain classified information. The next president may need all this information to help them run the country properly.

      </figure> <p>In February 2022, the NA claimed that 15 boxes of government papers were improperly taken from the White House to Mar-a-Lago. Donald Trump was asked to return these documents to the NA. Even after he returned some documents, it was discovered that a lot of documents were still missing.
These documents were marked as classified and are important for national security. They should have been safely returned to the NA. Instead, they were taken to the private residence of a person where they could have been damaged, stolen, or manipulated.
</p> <h5>What did the FBI find at Mar-a-Lago?</h5>  <p>According to a source, several boxes were seized from Mar-a-Lago. Donald Trump’s lawyer told NBC News that some papers had been seized during the search. In his statement, Trump also accused the FBI of breaking into his safe.
</p> <h5>What does this mean for Donald Trump?</h5>  <p>Keeping classified government documents that should have been returned without permission is a crime. If the investigation finds Donal Trump guilty, he could be imprisoned. This is not the first time Trump is being accused of mishandling official documents. </p>
<p>Many people have said that Trump should be punished if he has committed a crime, just like any other person. Trump’s supporters are not happy though. They claim that he is being unfairly targeted so he can’t contest the 2024 US Presidential elections. </p>
<p>No matter what side you are on, one thing is certain, the FBI has shown that no one is above the law (not even the former president!).
