Who are the Agniveers?
In 2022, the Indian government launched the Agnipath scheme. The government created the scheme to encourage young people to join the Indian Armed Forces (the Army, the Navy, and Air Force). The government faced a lot of protests due to this scheme.
The youths who will join through this scheme are called Agniveers. They will serve in the military for four years. A six-month training period is included. Most Agniveers must leave the Armed Forces after four years.
Along with regular salary, they would get a lump sum payout of Rs. 11.71 lakhs at the time of leaving. They will not receive any further pension or cash benefits.
Many people said that the scheme would fail. Yet, many young people signed up. The first batch of Agniveers recently completed their training.
Where did the first batch of Agniveers complete their training from?
2585 naval Agniveers finished their training from an Indian Navy training facility in Odisha. This includes 272 women. A passing-out parade was held for this occasion.
These Agniveers will now be posted on warships for sea training. The training at this facility included academic, service, and outdoor training.
What benefits will Agniveers receive?
The government will pay Agniveers. They can apply for permanent jobs in the Armed Forces after their service. But only a few will be chosen. The rest will have many re-employment chances.
Several Indian states, like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, have announced that Agniveers will be given preference in police recruitment. They will also get preference in recruitment to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles.
Agniveers will also get skill certificates after finishing their short-term military duty. This will help them find other jobs or seek higher education.
As the first batch of Agniveers completes their training, we can now look forward to seeing the benefits this scheme can bring to our country.
