What is the Hindu Kush Himalaya Region?
The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region is a big mountain range that stretches across eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Pakistan. It's an important source of water for ten of Asia’s biggest river systems.
The region provides for many people's needs in the form of drinking water, irrigation, electricity, industry, and sanitation. The area is not just crucial for water; it's also rich in culture, beauty, and biodiversity.
But sadly, it's one of the most ignored regions in the world. Climate change and other issues are causing big problems there. Scientists recently warned about the situation in this area.
What warning has been issued?

Recently, scientists have stated that the HKH region is a biosphere on the verge of ‘collapse’ or ‘destruction.’ The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) warned about this as many global experts are attending a meeting they are holding in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Researchers warn the situation is very serious because the region is facing nature and habitat loss too fast.
ICIMOD also said that 70% of the region’s natural diversity is already gone, despite efforts to protect it. They worry that it could be bad for animals, plants, and people if things don't change.
Have the scientists suggested any methods to protect the region?
Scientists want more help and money right away to stop the loss of nature in the HKH region. They say investing in this area is important to reverse habitat loss and prevent species extinction.
Globally, more money is being spent to protect nature, and people realise how important it is to save the environment. Scientists say we need to ensure the HKH region gets more money to save it before it's too late.
Let's hope scientists and experts can save the Hindu Kush Himalaya region before it's too late.
