</h5>  <p>Nuclear fusion is a process that produces energy similar to that which powers the sun. When two or more atoms combine to form one larger atom, this process is known as nuclear fusion, which releases a tremendous amount of heat energy. <p>Currently, fission, which creates energy by tearing atoms apart, is used in nuclear power plants. Even though nuclear fission is not using fossil fuels, nuclear meltdown disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima show that they may still be harmful to people and the environment.</p>
<p>There’s some good news. Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's (LLNL) National Ignition Facility made history by successfully producing a nuclear fusion reaction.

The officials from the United States of America’s (USA) Department of Energy have said that it is an important step to achieving carbon-free energy in the future. However, there are still more steps to be taken before this can be used.</p>
<p>The California-based LLNL announced that it had achieved this by using the largest laser in the world to first develop a fusion reaction that replicated the sun's energy-producing process. The team produced more energy from fusion than the energy given by the laser to power the nuclear fusion reaction. This is known as "net energy gain."</p>
<p>If nuclear fusion doesn’t give "net energy gain," then extra energy will not be created. Thus, it won’t be able to create enough energy for humans to use.

</h5>  <p>Nuclear fusion can create a clean source of energy that would remove the need for fossil fuels. However, more needs to be done before this can be achieved. Scientists must figure out how to increase nuclear fusion's ability to produce energy.</p>
<p>In order for nuclear fusion to be used, researchers must also find ways to gradually lower the cost of the technology. Or else, people will not be able to afford it. Also, researchers will need to collect the fusion energy so that it can be used.</p>
<p>Scientists are trying their best but it will be years, if not decades before nuclear fusion can create endless amounts of renewable energy. Scientists are trying everything to ensure that we win the fight against climate change.
