Do stray dogs attack a lot?
We've all seen stray dogs in our neighbourhoods. Most of the time, these dogs don't bother people. They can be quite friendly with those who regularly feed them. However, there are times when street dogs might attack people. Being attacked by a stray dog can be a really scary experience.
Recently, Wagh Bakri Tea Group’s executive director, Parag Desai, died after suffering a brain haemorrhage due to a fall. Some news reports suggested that he fell because stray dogs were chasing him. However, the hospital said there were no signs of dog bites on his body. Nevertheless, stray dog attacks do happen.
What to do during a stray dog attack?

If you ever come across an aggressive stray dog, remember to stay calm. Don't stare directly into its eyes because it might think you're threatening it. If the stray dog comes close, quietly move away. Running can make it follow you, so walking away calmly is better.
If the dog continues approaching, try to put something between you and the dog, like a tree, bench, or a garbage can. This can keep the dog from coming too close. If the dog keeps approaching you, shout loudly. This may scare it off and attract people who can help you.
If the dog attacks you, use rocks, sticks, or even a bag to protect yourself. Aim for the dog's nose or head. If you get knocked down, curl into a ball and use your arms to shield your head and neck. These are some steps to remember.
What if you get bitten?
If you get bitten by a dog, seek medical attention quickly. Even if it's just a small bite, you need to see a doctor because a dog bite can give you diseases like rabies.
Tell your parents or other grown-ups what happened. They can help you. Also, you can report the attack to the local authorities so that they can help prevent such attacks in the future.
Remember, not all stray dogs are ferocious. Some are friendly, while others are not. Still, it's better to approach a dog under the supervision of your parents or elders.
