<h5>What is the Environment Performance Index?</h5>  <p>
The Environment Performance Index (EPI) is an international ranking system that analyses the environment of countries around the world. It looks at three main categories to do this - ecosystem vitality, environmental health and climate change performance. It’s basically a report card rating the health and sustainability of a country.
The EPI’s main focus is policy. It looks at all the ways that a government’s laws, plans and actions help or harm the environment. Researchers study a lot of data to come up with the rankings in a fair and accurate manner. The purpose of the report is to offer guidance to countries that want to become more sustainable.
The EPI was started in 2002 and is released once every two years. The 2022 edition of the EPI was released recently and ranked 180 countries based on their environment and sustainability. Let’s look at what the report says.</p> <h5>Which countries performed the best and the worst on the EPI 2022?</h5>  <p>The top five sustainable countries in the world, according to the EPI, are Denmark, the United Kingdom (UK), Finland, Malta, and Sweden. The reason for Denmark being named the most sustainable country in the world is because it has reduced its carbon emissions by half in the past twenty-five years and is on track to have them reduced by seventy percent by 2030.</p>

<p>Thanks to its excellent bike lanes, bicycles outnumber cars on the streets of Denmark. Denmark recycles all its water and recycles or composts all its waste. Its methods are now being copied by other countries. The UK and Finland also have reduced their carbon emissions significantly in recent years, leading to their high score on the EPI.</p>
<p>The countries with the lowest scores on the EPI are India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
</p> <h5>How did India perform on the EPI 2022?</h5>  <p>Rather horribly. India’s rank was 180 out of all the 180 countries ranked. That makes it the most unsustainable country in the world. In the last EPI report that came out in 2020, India was ranked 168. Today things look much worse. </p>

<p>Why did we get such a bad rank? Well, India has lost tree cover, grassland and wetlands in huge quantities, leading to a poor score on ecosystem vitality. The quality of air and drinking water are also low. These factors led to India’s poor score on the ecosystem vitality and environmental health metrics. </p>
<p>India’s recent industrial growth has come at a cost of the environment. This means that our largest industries gain financial success by damaging the environment. That’s why our climate change performance score was also poor.
</p> <h5>How did the Government of India react to India’s ranking on the EPI 2022?</h5>  <p>The Government of India rejected the findings of the EPI by claiming that the report is unscientific. It reminded the world that India gets forty percent of its electricity from renewable energy, which is a powerful way to fight climate change. India is on its way to reducing its carbon emissions hugely by 2030 and completely by 2070.</p>

The Government insisted that it’s unfair to compare the emissions of such a huge developing country with the world’s second-largest population to tiny wealthy countries like Denmark and the UK. It said that India is investing heavily in renewable energy, electric vehicles, etc., to ensure that our environment is green and clean soon.
