<h5>What is Operation Ajay?</h5><p>Recently, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/israel-s-iron-dome-overwhelmed-by-repeated-attacks">Israel</a> has gone to war against Hamas after Hamas attacked the country. However, there are many Indians who are stuck in Israel during this moment of crisis. So, on 11th October 2023, India announced Operation Ajay. It is an operation to help those Indians trapped in Israel return home.</p><p>India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) says that around 18,000 Indians currently stay in Israel. External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar announced this operation on X (previously known as Twitter). Photo by Dr. S. Jaishankar.</figcaption></figure><h5>When are the flights scheduled?</h5><p>Many Indians were brought back on 12th October 2023 on a special flight. The Indian embassy in Israel will contact the other Indians in the country to arrange flights for their safe return.</p><p>The embassy has launched a 24-hour helpline. The embassy has also asked citizens to remain calm and vigilant and follow the security warnings being issued.</p><p>MEA has also set up a 24-hour control room to monitor the situation and provide information and assistance. Photo by Arindam Bagchi.</figcaption></figure><h5>Has India organised similar rescue missions earlier?</h5><p>The Indian government has, in the past, launched similar missions to help and rescue Indians worldwide. Some of them are:</p><ul><li>Operation Ganga- This operation was launched to rescue Indians following Russia's invasion of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/the-conflict-between-russia-and-ukraine">Ukraine</a> in 2022.</li><li>Operation Sankat Mochan- This operation was carried out to evacuate Indian and other foreign nationals from South Sudan during the civil war in 2016.</li><li>Operation Devi Shakti- Conducted in 2021. This was an operation to evacuate Indians and foreign nationals from Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country.</li><li>Operation Kaveri- Conducted in 2023. It is an operation to rescue many Indians from conflict-hit Sudan.</li></ul><p>These are some rescue missions undertaken by the Indian government to help the country’s citizens.</p>
