<h5>Why has the government reduced LPG prices?</h5><p>The central government lowered the price of domestic cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), by Rs 200 a cylinder. The decision was announced on 29th August 2023. This decision was taken ahead of elections scheduled in five states in the coming few months and next year's Lok Sabha elections.</p><p>Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi said that this reduction is a "Raksha Bandhan gift" to women of the country. This new rule became effective on 30th August 2023. Elections are scheduled in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.</p><p>The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said this decision will bring relief to many households across the country. The PM has said that the government is always trying to do everything possible to improve people's quality of life and benefit the poor and middle class. However, the opposition parties have criticised this decision.</p><h5>What have the opposition parties said?</h5><p>The opposition parties have always criticised the government over high cooking gas costs. They said this latest decision by the government is merely an election gimmick. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the central government took this decision as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost the election in Karnataka.</p><p>He also said the BJP is afraid as the opposition parties have united to form the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/indian-opposition-parties-have-formed-an-alliance">I.N.D.I.A. alliance</a>. He further said that the Congress governments in Karnataka and Rajasthan have given additional subsidies for LPG cylinders.</p><p>The CPI(M)’s general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, said that if the central government stopped collecting cess and surcharges on petroleum products, cylinder prices would be less.</p>

The prices have been reduced by Rs 200 per cylinder.
