On the first day, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, the Council of Ministers and many others who have been elected took oath as Members of Parliament (MP).

What happens at a Parliamentary session?

In a Parliamentary session, the elected MPs of the Lok Sabha meet to talk about current issues, make new laws, etc., to benefit the country. There are generally three sessions in a year:

  • Budget session (February to May)
  • Monsoon session (July to September)
  • Winter session (November to December)

Let’s take an example to understand this better. Assume there are 20 schools in your area, and the principal of each school is like an elected MP. They all meet thrice a year to discuss how to make schools better, help students learn, etc.

Similarly, the country’s leaders meet at the Parliament to discuss, decide, and make plans to benefit the citizens.

What can we expect from the latest session?

For the first time in 10 years, a coalition government has been formed. This means the BJP cannot make laws alone anymore. They need to work together with other parties in the NDA.

There are more MPs from opposition parties in the Lok Sabha now than before. This means there will be more debates and discussions about important issues.

Talking about issues is always a good idea. It's the best way to make decisions that are good for everyone! A strong opposition is very important for democracy to do well.
