What is the Asian Games?
The Asian Games is a multi-sport event held every four years. Athletes from all over Asia participate in this tournament. It was started in 1951 in New Delhi. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) organises this event.
Only seven countries have participated in every Asian Games: India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Thailand.
This year’s Asian Games is being held between September 23 and October 8 in Hangzhou, China. It's the 19th edition of this competition. It was supposed to happen in 2022 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. India has won its first gold medal in this year’s competition.
Who won the gold medal for India?
The Indian men's 10m rifle team won a gold medal in the Asian Games 2023. They even broke a world record! The team comprising Rudrankksh Patil, Divyansh Panwar, and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar scored 1893.7 in the qualification round.
This score broke the world record of 1893.3 created by China less than a month ago in Baku, Azerbaijan.
How many Indian athletes are participating in this tournament?
An Indian contingent of 655 athletes is competing in the Asian Games in 2023. In the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, India had 570 athletes and won 70 medals (16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze).
Now, because there are more Indian players in the Asian Games in 2023, many people think India might win even more medals. At the time of writing this, the country has already won 10 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze) and is placed in the 6th position in the medal table.
Let's hope India wins many more medals in this year's tournament.
